Experiential Design
— A couple of the coolest things I’ve ever done
Projected nightly on the Conservatory Of Flowers in Golden Gate Park in honor of San Francisco’s 50th Anniversary of the Summer of Love, for Obscura Digital & Illuminate.
This particular scene was all about extremely close up shots of flowers in bold half-tone.

This scene was all about solarization, an effect where the tone is reversed with extreme overexposure of photographic film.
It was so much fun working with Obscura Digital. I was asked to design a few of the scenes that were projected nightly on the Conservatory Of Flowers in Golden Gate Park to honor San Francisco’s city-wide celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Summer of Love.
The Photosynthesis project — a collaboration between Obscura Digital, Illuminate (instigators of the Bay Lights), and San Francisco’s Conservatory of Flowers — transforms the Conservatory into an artistic canvas by night. This analog projection system bathes the building in stunning imagery of the flowers and butterflies housed inside, teasing out what hides beneath its whitewashed curtain, catching the eye of passers-by, sparking curiosity and drawing them in through captivating beauty.
What if we treated great female scientists and engineers like they were stars?

I was honored to do the illustrations for such an important project. Some truly moving moments learning about all of these incredible women. But, have you ever drawn a portrait on a dark background? Eyes and teeth turn into demon spawn! I learned a few things on this one!
In this scene, the constellations that exist on the ceiling of the Grand Central Terminal come to life.
